Un colloque est organisé par l’ACPN (Association Canadienne des Produits Naturels de Santé) à Montréal le 27 sept. 11: ''La qualité des produits de santé naturels: réduire le défi pour l'industrie''. Tous ceux qui évoluent dans l'industrie savent les difficultés rencontrés au niveau qualité pour se conformer aux exigences des PSN. Justement, deux des conférences présentées le seront par des membres de la direction des PSN (en anglais). Vous y apprendrez du nouveau. Il y aura aussi des universitaires de renom qui discuteront de standardisation, études cliniques et R&D. Les produits cosmétiques, notamment les solaires, sont des PSN ! Venez-y!

Imaging and Analysis Methods for the Research Clinic

Please join us for a very interesting Review of Imaging and Analysis Methods for the Research Clinic By Dennis P. DaSilva, B.S. R&D Director at Canfield Scientific, Inc. on March 16th, 2010 at the Wyndham airport hotel (MTL).

SUMMARY: This talk will cover a selection of current imaging technologies, methods and image analysis tools available to the clinic. A review of case studies using applied image analysis is intended to show the potential for practical application in the
clinic or the lab.

SPF and UVA testing methods clarified in ISO report

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has put in place a new report covering common methods used around the world for testing SPF and UVA in vivo and in vitro. This will facilitate comparisons between products, according to Professor Philippe Masson, convener of the working group behind the report: “Thanks to ISO/TR 26369:2009, users are now able to compare methods quickly and easily, from just one document.”

This technical report covers 6 methods to test SPF in vivo, including a test method currently used in Europe, Japan and South Africa as well as that currently used in the USA and Canada, and the Korean and Chinese methods.

A report containing a standardised in vivo UVA method is expected to be published within the next year. As for an in vitro UVA method, a report is expected in 2011 and will most probably be based on the Colipa method.

The History of mascara

Ancient Egyptians were the first known to use mascara. They blended kohl with a mixture of ingredients such as copper, lead crocodile dung, burnt almonds and honey. Sticks of wood, bones and ivory were used as applicators. Believed eyes to be the windows of the soul Ancient Egyptians concealed them to ward off bad energy and evil spirits. Both Egyptian men and women wore mascara.

During the Victorian Era in the early 1800’s, castor oil and elderberry juice were believed to enhance lashes. In the late 18oo’s, petroleum jelly, the most prominent ingredient in mascara was patented. The first packaged cosmetic mascara, a blend of petroleum and black coal dust, was created in 1917 by Eugene Rimmel, the founder of Maybelline Cosmetics.

In the 1930’s, due to lack of cosmetic regulation standards, many women were left blind due to lash dyes containing aniline. Only a few years later, with the arrival of fast drying waterproof mascara containing 50% turpentine, women were able to stay chic longer. However, this mascara had an unbearable smell and caused some allergic reactions. In the 1950’s, synthetic formulas finally replaced the petroleum base used in most mascara formulas.

Today, state of the art technology and fierce competition push cosmetic companies to consistently reformulate their products till that perfect mascara is bottled. Women can purchase their ideal mascara depending on their particular lash needs and their budget!

1,4-dioxane not toxic: Health Canada

Health Canada has recently concluded that1,4-dioxane, commonly found in trace amounts in baby shampoo, bubble bath and liquid soap, is no longer considered as a possible carcinogen and should not be listed as toxic to human health.

This decision has caused some reactions since the state of California considers it as a chemical known to cause cancer and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has listed 1,4-dioxane as "possibly carcinogenic to humans".
However, after reviewing the scientific evidence, Health Canada concluded that the low dosages of the chemical found in personal-care products do not pose any health risk.

Health Canada Amends Cosmetics Hotlist

Glycerin gets added to the list!!

Health Canada has recently amended its Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. Materials such as cyanoacrylate-based adhesives, diethylene glycol, diethylhexyl phthalate, 1-naphthol and even glycerin are now included! Glycerin was added to the list due to possible contamination of diethylene glycol (DEG).

A gene related to the appearence of aging

Scientists in Atlantic Canada have found a gene that may play a role in skin aging. They were investigating the genetic cause of a rare disorder: the cutis laxa type 2 ( CL2), which causes skin on the hands, feet and face to be loose and older looking, when they discovered correlations with the synthesis of proline.
Several Maritime Canadian families with CL2 were identified and scientists were able to identify the gene responsible for CL2 in these patients, citing an interruption of the metabolism of the amino acid.
The findings are published in the current online issue of American journal of human genetics and are part of the Atlantic Medical Genetic and Genomic Initiative (AMGGI).
